He lives in a miserable garret in Kolkata, is unemployed and writing a novel in parallel to his humiliating search for paid work. A former fellow student invites him to his cousin Aparna's wedding in the country. When the wedding does not take place, Apu marries Aparna. They soon fall genuinely in love and are expecting a child. A stroke of fate leads Apu to wander aimlessly for several years until he finds new hope. The conclusion of the Apu trilogy is a touching experience, also thanks to Ravi Shankar's compositions. Shankar had already worked with Ray on the first part of the trilogy and revolutionized film music in Bengali and Indian cinema. (gv)
